Bike & Barge on Neckar & Rhine
Bad Wimpfen is a lovely spa and health resort on river Neckar. A long history left impressive traces, well preserved historic buildings add flair and flavour to the modern, lively city.
During this easy bike & barge tour you explore historic places of major reputation. Celt, German tribes, the Roman Empire – they all used the strategically important routes. Enjoy a warm and friendly climate, cycle along magnificent vineyards interspersed with little villages. Half timbered houses or fortresses with buttresses and cranellations – get a good idea of Germany’s history.

Saturday: individual journey to Bad Wimpfen
Embarkation from 4.00 pm
Sunday: Bad Wimpfen – Eberbach, approx. 40 km by bicycle
Cycle to Neckarzimmer, there we walk or cycle to fortress Hornberg, where Götz von Berlichingen lived. Then continue by bicycle to Eberbach, the old residence of German nobility Staufer.
Monday: Eberbach – Heidelberg, approx. 38 km by bicycle
Our first highlight of the day is the quaint town Hirschorn , the pearl of Neckar valley. Then we cycle through idyllic medium mountain range Odenwald to Neckarsteinach and then via Neckargemünd to Heidelberg. Stroll through the historic old town and visit the ruins of the mighty castle.
Tuesday: Heidelberg – Ladenburg – Worms, approx. 55 km by bicycle
Say goodbye to river Neckar and welcome on old Father Rhine. Worms is a major historic centre of Germany, with the famous dome, the Nibelungen saga and Martin Luther, reformer and protestant.
Wednesday: Worms-Nierstein, approx. 40 km by bicycle
The mild and fertile climate shows in orchards, fertile fields, lush meadows and vineyards. A tractor takes you up into the vineyards, afterwards wine-tasting and a hearty meal at the wine-grower’s.
Thursday: Nierstein – Main, approx. 20 km by bicycle
Romantic, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque style: all these you will encounter during the guided city tour of Mainz.
Friday: Main – Bingen – Koblenz, approx. 35 km by bicycle
Cycle tour to Bingen and Rudesheim. Our boat will bring us to Koblenz.
Saturday: Disembarkation and individual journey home
Route features
Mainly on tranquil roads free of traffic, solitary country lanes and asphalted cycle paths along the dyke without any climbs worth mentioning. Well suited tour for the lesser fit cyclist.
