Bike & Barge on Neckar & Rhine

The itinerary of this bike & barge tour on Germany’s oldest trade route – River Rhine – reads like an excursion into history: the Dome of Worms, Nibelungen Gate, the historic old town and castle ruin of Heidelberg, the intimidating fortification of Koblenz. Between all these places you cycle through lovely little historic villages with half-timbered houses, small alleys and then again past vineyards and idyllic river meadows. Enjoy a varied and hugely interesting cycle break with warm and welcoming climate.

Tour course

Saturday: Individual journey to Koblenz
Embarkation from 4.00 pm.

Sunday:  Koblenz - Bingen – Mainz, approx. 35 km by bicycle
The boat takes you upriver from Koblenz to Rudesheim. Cycle via Bingen to Mainz (museums).

Monday: Mainz – Nierstein, approx. 20 km by bicycle
Enjoy the quaint houses and unique atmosphere of Mainz on a cycle tour through the city. Then you cover the distance to Nierstein, lunch break on board. By tractor into the vineyards, wine tasting and a hearty meal at a wine-grower’s end the day with proper style.

Tuesday: Nierstein – Worms, approx. 40 km by bicycle
Cycle to Worms via Oggenheim. Guided city tour of Worms – a city that proved to be quite crucial in German history. The famous dome of Worms, where emperors where crowned, centre of Nibelungen (here Sigfrid is said to have been murdered by Hagen) and Martin Luther, protestant reformer.

Wednesday: Worms-Mannheim-Heidelberg, approx. 55 km by bicycle
Crossing Nibelungenbridge to Lampertheim and Mannheim and then continue to Celtic town Ladenburg. Heidelberg is famous for the oldest university of Germany, the old town still preserving the unique atmosphere of Middle Ages.

Thursday: Heidelberg -  Eberbach, approx. 40 km by bicycle
From Heidelberg via Ziegelhausen to Neckargemünd. We now enter Odenwald, Germanys lovely wooded low mountain range and once crucial strategic limes for the Romans.
Eberbach with small and cornered alleys gives a good impression of every day life in mediaeval German places.

Friday: Eberbach – Bad Wimpfen, approx. 40 km by bicycle
Fortress Hornberg in Neckarzimmern is the first important stage of the tour. Here Götz von Berlichingen used to live. Bad Wimpfen is a charming health and spa resort. The long history involved early settlements (stone-age), Celts and Germans, the Roman Empire, and flourishing centre of Germany’s famous nobility Hohenstaufer, home of Emperor Friedrich I Barbarossa. Explore the modern and historic place, charming and lively.

Saturday: Disembarkation and individual journey home or extra days.
